What is microneedling?
Microneedling is a cosmetic treatment that uses very small, controlled needles to create microchannels in the skin. This controlled process is designed to support the skin’s natural repair response and may be used to improve the appearance of texture, fine lines, certain scars, and overall skin quality.
Results and the number of treatments needed vary. A consultation helps determine whether microneedling is appropriate for your skin and your goals.
Preparing for treatment
Your provider should know about your skincare products, medications, recent cosmetic procedures, history of cold sores, active skin conditions, and any tendency to scar. Certain products or treatments may need to be paused before the appointment.
Arrive with clean skin unless your provider gives you different instructions. Avoid intentionally tanning or irritating the treatment area before the procedure.
What to expect afterward
Redness, warmth, tightness, mild swelling, or sensitivity can occur after microneedling. The skin may look similar to a mild sunburn for a short period. Some patients may also experience dryness or light flaking as the skin recovers.
Your aftercare matters. Use the gentle products recommended by your provider, avoid picking or scrubbing, and protect the skin from sun exposure. Strong active ingredients should generally be restarted only when your clinician says your skin is ready.
Consistency matters more than aggressive treatment
Skin improvement takes time. More aggressive treatment is not always better, especially if it increases irritation or delays healing. Your provider will recommend an interval based on your skin, treatment depth, goals, and response.
Healthy skin is the foundation.
Microneedling works best as part of a thoughtful skincare plan. Daily sun protection, appropriate cleansing and moisturizing, and consistent home care can help support the results of in-office treatment.
